Synonyms: Pollutant, Pollutants, Pathogens, Oils, Trash, Waste, Debris, Heavy Metals, Sediment

Stormwater pollution consists of liquid or solid debris that negatively impacts water quality and is washed off the landscape into storm drains, streams, and other water bodies. The pollution is produced by various human applications or activities and include:

  • Excess nutrients
  • Sediment
  • Bacteria or other pathogens
  • Trash and debris
  • Hazardous chemicals

Pollution harms ecosystems, contaminates drinking supplies, and can degrade recreational areas.  Many, if not all forms of pollution are preventable or treatable.  You can reduce your impact on local water bodies by following the Habits to Help on this website.  Consider implementing BMPs to also help reduce water pollution!
